Marbo MS-L002 – The Adjustable Weight Bench For Your Gym

As mentioned in my first review of their equipment, Marbo Sport is a good polish manufacturer of wide range of various fitness equipment. They produce 3 levels of equipment:

  • MH – Marbo Home which is their basic line of equipment
  • MS – Semi-Pro line for more avid home lifters
  • MP – Pro line suitable also for commercial use

Today I’m going to write about the adjustable weight bench for my home gym – Marbo MS-L002. As the name suggests, it belongs to the Semi-Pro line, which is aimed at home users or small club gyms. I’ve bought it to supplement my PowerLine PPR200X power rack.

Features And SpecificationsMarbo MS-L002 bench side view

First, let’s look at some basic information about the MS-L002:

  • the bench is made from steel profile 1.97 x 1.97 inch (50 mm), the thickness of the steel is 0.0787 inch (2 mm)
  • weight: 60 lbs (27 kg)
  • maximum weight: 770 lbs (350 kg, including the lifter)
  • dimensions of the base: (length x width) 52.7 x 16.5 (134 x 42 cm)
  • the height of the bench is 18.9 inches (48 cm)
  • dimensions of the seat: 11.8 x 11 inches (30 x 28 cm)
  • dimensions of the backrest: 31.5 x 11 inches (80 x 28 cm)
  • the thickness of the foam on the seat and backrest is 1.18 inch (3 cm)
  • 5 backrest positions: -20°, 0°, 25°, 45° and 80°
  • 3 seat positions: 0°, 15° and 25°
  • possibility to mount accessories such as the preacher curl, pull-down or leg extension/curl attachments

Tools needed for assembly:

  • 2 wrenches of the same size
  • Phillips screwdriver for attaching the backrest and seat to the frame

I’ve owned this bench for about 2 years so I don’t remember the exact assembly experience, but as far as I remember the assembly was very simple. If you look at the pictures you’ll see that main frame is welded so all you need to do is attach the feet, seat and backrest frames and backrest support “leg” which is used to control the incline angle of the bench.

The last step is to attach the actual seat and backrest and this is the only point I didn’t like. There are no pre-drilled holes or marked spots where you should attach it, you have to measure it yourself. I’m not sure how it’s solved on higher end equipment like Rogue adjustable bench but I think it would be nicer to have this sorted for the customer.

User ExperienceMarbo MS-L002 bench incline side view

I’ve owned the MS-L002 for about 2 years and I use it every workout (3 days a week) without issues. It’s reasonably comfortable and very durable – I’ve put weight plates on it, stepped on it, wife used it as clothes horse (which I didn’t like) and my daughter crawled all over it and it still looks as new, no tears, loose seams etc.

Maximum weight I’ve used on it was about 350 lbs (160 kg) (210 lbs on the bar + my 140 lbs) which is not even the half of the bench weight limit, so as you would expect – no stability issues.

Now about cons, there are two that I’ve encountered. First – although it is possible to set backrest to decline, I’m not sure if it’s really usable since there is no support where you could anchor your feet. Second – the backrest extends quite a lot beyond base so when I’m doing lying triceps extensions the other side of the bench lifts off the floor. Solution to this is simple, just put one or more 45-pound plates on the foot of the bench, depending on the weight you’re training with.

All in all, I’m very satisfied with the purchase of Marbo MS-L002 adjustable bench. It is a quality product for a good price. It was easy to put together and is easy to use. It has more than sufficient weight limit for me and is stable under the load. Padding is sufficient and upholstery is durable, I don’t see any wear marks even after two years of regular use (2 – 3 times a week). The paint job is also very good, no scratches anywhere. And I really like the red/black color combo:)

If, after reading my review, you were ready to buy one I have sad news, it’s no longer available. But I’ve done some research and found a few good alternatives:

  • CAP Barbell Deluxe Bench – 349 reviews on Amazon, 4-star rating
    • 50 lbs (22.6 kg) weight, 500 lbs (226 kg) weight capacity
    • 7 backrest positions (but no decline), 3 seat positions
    • 2 anchor points for power bands
    • wheels for easy manipulation
  • Bowflex SelectTech 5.1 – 716 reviews on Amazon, 4.5-star rating
    • 66 lbs (30 kg) weight, 480 lbs (218 kg) weight capacity
    • 6 backrest positions, 2 seat positions
    • removable leg attachment for support in the decline position
    • wheels for easy manipulation
    • big gap between seat and backrest
  • PowerBlock Sport Bench – 117 reviews on Amazon, 4.5-star rating
    • 57 lbs (26 kg) weight, 550 lbs (250 kg) weight capacity
    • 5 backrest positions, seat adjusts automatically when the backrest is set to incline
    • wheels for easy manipulation
    • only a small gap between seat and backrest compared to other benches
    • you can buy dip attachment with 250 lbs (113 kg) weight capacity

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my review and as always, if you have any questions and suggestion you’re more than welcome to leave a comment:)

I will be frank with you, I am not disappointed that the MS-L002 is no longer available. The assembly point that you made about the seat cushion and frame was valuable information for me not to get it. I have learned from assembling Ikea furniture that great instructions and ease of assembly are important buying points for me. I am moving on…

      Hello Tony.
It wasn’t a big deal for me (especially for the price) but I agree it would be much nicer to have it sorted for the customer. Thanks for dropping by:)

WOW! Amazing review on the Marbo MS-L002. I’ve been looking around for one of these, but I can’t seem to find one with great reviews AND cheap enough with decent quality. However, this one seems like a viable option, especially since you’ve been using it for a long time and it’s still good as new. I’m very interested now. Thanks a lot, I’ll be purchasing one of these very soon 🙂

      Hi Brandon.
I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the review. Be sure to choose one with adjustable seat otherwise you could slip while using the bench in an incline position.
      Thank you

Hi. I am a relatively small guy and recently decided to start getting into weight training. Nothing major. Just a couple of times a week to get the heart pumping. Unfortunately I have very little knowledge regarding training with weights.
Would a bench like this be essential to get started?

    Thank you

      Hello Jean.
If you want to start weight training with minimum investment, my recommendation would be to join the gym for a few weeks/months and see if you like it:)

If you want to build a home gym you can start with a bench like Marbo MS-L002 and dumbbells, but I would recommend to take it up a notch and buy a bench with some stands (see the end of my review for some recommended ones) and barbell (standard or better olympic) with suitable plates (reviews coming soon).

Just make sure you’ll start with some sound lifting program suitable for beginners.
      All the best:)

    Hey Marek,

I was currently looking at a replacement bench for the one I have (it’s busted) what would you recommend for a person just easing back into flat bench lifting and doesn’t wanna break the bank?

    Thanks for the helpful review

      Hi Ron,
you need to consider how you will use the bench, I’ll give you two examples:

Marcy flat bench – 4,5-star rating out of 870 reviews. But looking at its stats reveals its weight capacity is only 300 lbs. It should be enough for a dumbbell work but you need larger weight capacity if you plan to use it also for barbell bench press. Using myself as an example, I am a small guy weighing 140 lbs and I’m able to bench my bodyweight which gives us 280 lbs – almost the limit of the bench.

Adidas performance flat bench – 4,5-star rating out of 120 reviews, 600 lbs capacity which is enough also for barbell lifting. It’s a lot better but double the price.

I hope this will help you to pick the right bench:)
